When hunting rats with a dog, ferret or stick, it is advisable to tuck-in trouser bottoms with may otherwise be used as bolt-holes. The normal reaction of a rat, when cornered, is to crouch or stand still in real or feigned terror. Then, when the predator is almost within striking distance, to jump at him with a scream, hoping to escape in the ensuing confusion.

The "difficult second album" follow-up to our first self-produced zine (issue 1). Yes, issue 2 is dedicated to the theme of 'gigs, concerts, festivals etc' broadening our general concern with parties to the arena of music. Writers and artists have responded with pieces that engage with the highs and lows of live musical performance, of being a fan and audience member - with short stories, comic strips, illustrations, articles and even your very own festival paper doll to cut out and dress.

Bound by staples, and made with all our loving. Leaf through it at our leisure when waiting in the queue through the tepid support acts, or waiting outside for a taxi to cart you away when the carnival is over.

Yes, we are turning classy with a range of recipes to try at home, recommendations for appropriate music to play at your soiree, and a limmerick to call your own Sir Inkington the Fourth as fodder for making small talk. Alongside that are comics, illustrations, short stories and poems that circle around our theme like a ravenous guest waiting for the buffet table to be open for business.

Today is July 25 2009 and I'm writing this zine to take part in a 24 hour zine making event. Typically, when I sit down to make a zine all planets must be aligned. I need blank paper. Will I make it to the copy place before it closes? Why didn't I put the lid on the gluestick after I last used it? 

July is international zine month and today is my first free Saturday in weeks. Surely this is a sign that today I can answer the 24 hour zine making challenge.

The idea behind Mini Majellen was to create a visual piece within certain creative boundaries...black-only print, able to be photocopied; printed on a single A3 sheet, cut and concertina folded into a small paged book; created purely from found things.

The paper, the binding, the source material - all are found.

Objects and scraps of paper picked off city streets, imagery found in secondhand books from charity book sales, items and ideas found within my own personal collection of emphemera and arty bits. These come together to encapsulate a single idea.
