She works hard to make the American setting convincing, peppering it with cultural references picked up from books and television, and while there are inevitably a few slips (A Big Mac with Worcestshire sauce?) she does manage to convey a picture of Miami during a long hot summer surprisingly well...

Gwynpaine MacIntyre, the pseydonym of a writer who specialised in science fiction and fantasy. An autobiographical note revealed that he had been born in England and now lived in New York, but stated that, because of his unhappy childhood, he would never reveal his real name...

He was a neat, bearded, impassive figure who usually wore a hat and overcoat, and he could be seen walking around the city, or standing stock still, bearing a long, colourful hand-lettered sign reading 'UFO Chariots Isaiah 66:15 Christ Return', or some variation of that. One night, back in the eighties...
